What Is Verbal Reasoning?

Why VR Is the Section Students Improve Fastest

Verbal reasoning tests the ability to think logically with words, patterns, and codes. It is one of the four core 11+ subjects and often carries significant weight in grammar school selection.

Unlike maths or English, verbal reasoning is not taught in school — which means most students start from zero. But this also means the gains are often spectacular: students who are properly prepared have a clear advantage over those who are not.

VR can absolutely be taught. Pattern recognition, code-breaking logic, and vocabulary breadth are all developable skills — which is why verbal reasoning is the section where our students make the biggest leaps.

Why Most Students Struggle at First

None of the 21 question types appear in the school curriculum
Students must recognise question types instantly under time pressure
Coding/decoding requires a logic pattern not taught anywhere else
Without a systematic method, guessing becomes the default

Success Stories

Verbal Reasoning Results

Real outcomes from families who trusted us with their child's VR preparation.

Verbal reasoning was our biggest worry — my son just couldn't see the patterns. His Nisus tutor broke every question type down with a clear method. Within 8 weeks he was confident with all the main types.

The 21 question types felt overwhelming until the tutor showed us they all follow logical patterns that can be learned. My daughter went from dreading VR to actually enjoying the puzzle element of it.

We started with very low VR scores in our son's mock. The Nisus programme was completely systematic — one question type at a time, properly understood. His VR was his best subject in the actual exam.
